Speak louder

It’s one of the most beautiful mountain bike magazines in the world.  Not just my opinion, but of those who know, all over the world. And I’m honoured to be the new Editor of SPOKE magazine.  You should check it out, if you appreciate fine writing, stunning photography and an attitude that speaks to the rider in us all.

Having the paper copy in your hands is definitely the experience, but you technological types can view it on Zinio too…

Why I can’t leave (1)

Posted in Beer, Bikes, General, MTB, Riding by brettok on June 16, 2010

There are plenty of great things about my adopted city of Wellington.  Sure, it’s windy.  Yep, it rains a bit in winter (that’s what is supposed to happen in winter, yeah?).  But those things just don’t bother me.  It’s just weather.  Everything else about this place cancels out those two minor foibles.  The main reason I feel I can’t leave is the riding.  The mountain biking is just too good to give up.  The trails in this video are my ‘locals’.  The ones I ride more than any others.  Not a bad place to go for a ride.  Check out Caleb’s helmet cam work from Makara Peak  by clicking the photo, and view other Welly trails on SPOKE’s Vimeo channel.

On The Road, Part 2; No place like home.

After too few days in Wellington to show the boys what it’s all about, we were up at the crack of dawn to load ourselves into a different wagon, with a different driver, to hit the trails on a different island.  We’d been looking forward to the South, and like Rod Stewart, we were sailing. (more…)

This was it.  What I was looking forward to after Karapoti, which was more a case of “just get it over with”.  Getting on the road, with good mates and great riding, for the fun of it.  And of course a little concert to kick it all off.   (more…)

The Exorcism

Posted in Epics, Icons, MTB, Racing by brettok on March 8, 2010

Back in my youth, my mates at the time were fascinated by the controversial ‘horror’ film from the 70’s, The Exorcist.  They would quote lines from it verbatim, and although I was yet to view it, I soon knew the best/worst of the expletive-laden script.  Finally, I saw the film one night at a midnight to dawn session at the drive-in, and while it scared me somewhat, I still didn’t want to turn away and miss any of the vomitting, swearing, levitating, head-spinning action.  Kind of like how I feel about Karapoti;  it’s a hell of a race, but I couldn’t turn my back on it.  Not until the demons of last year were finally cast out.   (more…)
