More News From Nowhere

Posted in Bikes, Kit, Racing by brettok on September 18, 2009

Writing for mountain bike magazines has its perks.  Josh has been testing some sweet bikes lately (Tomac, Pivot), and I’ve been handed the privilege of getting first dibs in NZ to test the much-vaunted SRAM XX groupset for SPOKE.

Unless you’ve been living under a proverbial mountain bike rock, you’ll have heard of SRAM’s new super-groupset. Lighter, cooler and more expensive than anything that’s gone before it, it’s aimed at fit-as-fuck racers, and fat doctors with even fatter wallets.  I don’t seem to fit either category, but damned if that’s gonna stop me doing my best to give it a good thrashing.

So into the deep-end I throw myself, with my first ride on an unfamiliar bike being a race no less.  Well, this is a race groupset, on a race bike, so hopefully my best impersonation of a racer will suffice.

What I can lay claim to though is being a bit of a weight weenie, and this thing certainly delivers on that front;  all nicely packaged on a GT Marathon Team carbon, the whole shebang tips the scales at a scant 10.3 kg (22.6lbs)!

Better go shave the legs and get the bibs ready…

For goodness sake K Man, talk about ifs and buts. Yeah, what if that happens, this could happen and then maybe something else will happen. You’re right, it’s a recipe for disaster. In the mean time let him ride it and see how it is. If you want to speculate on something….. what if you buy a S Works bike and it spends every second month in the shop for warranty work. Welcome to my world.
    P.S. Cheers for the socks

Can you afford it Brewsher? (How’s fatherhood treating you?)

Keeds, one big stack and your hydraulic brake line could get ripped out, too. But you don’t see that often, do ya?

    I wouldn’t buy Crossmax’s, but didn’t you own 2 sets before?

It’s all academic, just gonna ride it and write it…

If you could work 70hrs a week at McDonalds it’d be about the same. Fatherhood forces you to grow up a little, and spend less time on the trails unfortunately.

    I guess that’s why I never became a father…

Time to go play on the trails.
